The idea was created in 1982 by American illustrator and designer Bonnie Zacherle, but at the time she was working with sculptor Charles Muenchinger who had submitted a design patent in August 1981 for an ornamental design for a toy animal. They then just placed the 2 ideas together and launched the toy in 1983.
