The journey to self-discovery is an extremely rewarding one, and every person on earth should delve into the ins and outs of who they are. Life is extra challenging when one is unsure of what they stand for, who they are and what makes them happy. Most people find it difficult to get to the bottom of their core ‘person’, especially with all the outside noise of society telling them who to be, what to like, what to buy and what to do. Your personal desirtop ways to discover your inner self – things you may already be doing! Our list is made up of the simplest ways that are proven to get you learning more about yourself!
1 – Spend More Time Alone
Spending more time alone is the best way to cut out the outside noise, and internally reflect. Being alone allows you to express more of your true self, away from the distractions of other people. During this time, do something you enjoy – cook your favourite meal, read a book, or – if you want to be serious about it, meditate! Try and keep any technological devices away, so that you don’t get tempted to waste this sacred time on flicking through the latest Instagram or Facebook posts!
2 – Travel
Travelling is one of the greatest ways to learn more about who you are. When one is removed from their comfort zone, and in a place that’s unfamiliar, they have to rely on themselves – which acts as the perfect opportunity to learn more about who they are and what they do in unusual situations. Travelling also helps one to understand their likes and dislikes, as they are usually trying new things, seeing new things and are exposed to so much more. They say trips in nature, such as a safari adventure, is the best way to connect with your authentic self. Why? Well, perhaps it has something to do with the peace and tranquillity that surround you and the fact that you are far away from the city buzz.
3 – Hang with Like-Minded People
Spend time with people who have the same values as you, and people who encourage you to be confident in who you are. Spending time with people you don’t see eye to eye with, on many different levels are not people you want to be around – you will either feel obliged to fit into their mould, or you’ll just not fit in at all and feel rather isolated. Be picky about who you give your time to, as these people impact your life and influence you.
4 – Keep a Journal
Write about your feelings – journal about anything and everything – this will help you to express your deepest thoughts, without feeling like you’re being judged, complaining, or even boasting to someone. Most people underestimate the power of journaling, but it certainly helps one to see their thoughts on paper and gives them a better perspective.
5 – Invest in Your Interests
Every person has interests, and if you invest in them you may stumble upon a hidden talent. If you’re interested in yoga – sign up for a yoga class. If you’re interested in learning about a certain subject – study it part-time. Realising your interests is a great learning experience, and investing in them means investing in yourself!
6 – Take Time to Reflect
Life is busy, and we often fall short of counting our blessings or looking back at how far we’ve come and how much we have achieved. The best ways to reflect is through meditation, but you could also reflect through writing. Reflection helps us to be more mindful, present and grateful for our lives, and the people in it.
7 – Challenge Yourself
By challenging yourself, we really mean pushing yourself. Pushing yourself to grow, to face your fears, to do things you never thought you’d do. It’s about overcoming the limitations you have set for yourself and giving yourself space to realise that you are capable of anything when you remove fear and self-restriction. This is a fantastic way to discover who you are – and realise that you are stronger than you think. If these ten super-strong cats can do it, so can you!
8 – Do What Feels Right for You
We all have that little voice inside our head, that lets us know when we aren’t being authentically ourselves – and making decisions that we don’t sincerely believe in. Remember to listen to that voice, and make decisions and choices based on what feels right. It doesn’t matter what society may say, or what the trends are – believe in what you feel to be right, and stand by it.
9 – Identify Your Values
Write down your values. This will help you to determine what is meaningful to you, and where your priorities lie. Your values are who you are, and you should always be aware of them. It certainly helps in discovering your inner self and familiarising yourself with what you truly believe in.
10 – Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Always be true to yourself, and celebrate who you are, without comparing yourself to others!
