Top 10 Foods For an Under the Sea – Octopus Party

Sea food is something that I enjoy eating as much as I can. From all sorts of fish, crabs, mussels and prawns I have tried them all. But one sea creature that I have not tried yet is an Octopus, but I have not tried it, because I don’t like the thought of eating it! But there are some alternative kinds of octopus I would love to try, and here are the very best of them…

The best bit about this tasty looking octopus Bento box meal isn’t the tasty looking octopus made from an egg, or the heart-shaped strawberries, but rather the fish’N’chips fish-shaped crisps being used to great effect for the first time in a lunch box!!!

This octopus is in fact a pie crust that is sat over a chicken pie! But lets face it, they could be sat over the top of anything and still be cool. Soup, hot-pot, stew, you name it it would look great. And with a nice making guide in the link they are well worth a go indeed.

Made by Karen Portaleo of Highland Bakery this is very, very impressive cake work indeed, and weighing in at over 200 pounds it is definitely the world’s largest octopus shaped food. But I have not made it number 1 because it is just too much, most of us could only dream of having cake making skills this good, but that still doesn’t stop it be jaw dropping good.

Octopus on pizza might not be a good idea, but pizza shaped like one is a very good idea indeed! There isn’t a recipe or making guide because it is open to artistic interpretation.

Using simple hot-dog sausages that have been cooked and then cut into shape, these fun party/BBQ snacks are a joy to see. There is no making guide or recipe in the link, but that is because you don’t need it. You just a tin of hotdogs and a knife to make 4 cuts.

  5. I do enjoy seafood myself although I am not as adventurous as you. I love tilapia, catfish, walleye, shrimp, crab and of course lobster. I like the hot dogs because it looks so easy. A food post is always a good one in my book. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  6. My favorite is the ice cubes, they are amazing. Some of them I am not so sure – there is something a little off putting to see legs over the side of the dish. I have to admit, the cake is very realistic, so I give the baker a lot of credit for such a great job.

  7. Love your post of these “Octopuses” and it made me be a little bit hungry 😉 … But i don´t think that i ever, even would try to eat a real Octopus … // Maria 🙂

  8. I like all the “bread like” ones: Pizza, pie and soup bowl. Of course if I went to a dinner party and the hostess brought out the soup in such bowls, I would just have to smack Martha Stewart for showing us all up. 🙂

  9. I, too, just don’t think I could bring myself to eat octopus (although I did eat fried rattlesnake when I lived in Arizona!). That cake leaves me speechless and feeling squeamish. The rest of them are all cute ideas.

  10. Love all of these, although that cake is a little too life like. The octopie can only go over seafood pie, or a bisque… Hubby has tried octopus and said it was quite nice, I’m yet to get there.

  11. 1) the Cake? Amazing!

    2) Since I didn’t miss your post about the hot dogs, I am onto the real reason why the hot dog octopi won the #1 spot! Hot dogs are your favorite!

    3) What the heck is a ‘Bento box’???

  12. They are really good, all of them. Some of them demands experience and patience, I will mean.
You are really cheating yourself Russel, when you don’t taste the octopussy. I learned to like it here in Spain, where it is fresh and not the frozen rings, we can buy as usual.
    Thanks for sharing.

  13. Okay, your number 1 was spot on – it’s a food that I could make and it won’t freak me out to eat! 🙂 Plus, it’s not time consuming like some of the other items! Some people have way more time on their hands than I do – I’m pretty sure I’ve said that to you before; however, sometimes I have to repeat it when I see what others are creating!

  14. I’m with you on eating octopus. I just can’t bring myself to put all those suckers in my mouth. These octopi however look very appetising. It makes me want to have a seafood themed party with a twist.

  15. Well I think that octopus shaped cake should have gotten the #1 spot! I can only imagine how long it took to bake and make that thing! On first blush you could be forgiven for thinking it was a real octopus!

So, you get hot dogs in a tin? Must be a British thing. In Canada here you get a dozen hot dogs in plastic wrap. And of course, the buns come in packages of eight. What the hell is up with that eh?

Heh… another great list Russell! Keep up the great work… I’m thinking it must take you some time to put these things together.

  16. What you need is a place like Rehoboth Beach, Virginia Beach or Chincoteague. All have cottages on or near the beach with wide porches so you can enjoy the view and your meal at the same time. Wish I could be at the beach right now. *sighs wistfully*

Which one did you like?
