Over the weeks and months, of this blog we have come to see some rather amazing street art. Some have been nerdy, some amazing and some are just made to make people like us smile. That is where the amazing cartoon chalk drawing skills of David Zinn comes into it. He is a very talented street artist who creates funny chalk drawings about the green creature Sluggo and his friends that he invented. These delightful characters have been seen all over sidewalks in Ann Arbor, Michigan and I would like to show you just a small selection of them…

FACT: Have you see a teacher use chalk or maybe you have seen people mark tennis courts and football pitches with it?! Well, that isn’t true because chalk has not been used for those things since the 80’s as mining costs were already too high to get it. Nowadays blackboard chalk and line painting are done with a solid chemical driven paint.

FACT: Strangely chalk is not weathered by water as its fine-grained structure makes it almost waterproof, but when that water is in frost form chalk cracks and weathers badly.

FACT: Have you ever seen gymnasts and other athletes wipe their hands in that white power before performing?!? Well, guess what, that is chalk and it is used to provide grip.

FACT: Chalk is highly porous which means it can not only filter water rather well, but it can also be used to store it as well!

FACT: All of the chalk that is used in the world today dates from the Cretaceous Period which was about 121 million years ago! (give or take a few million years)

FACT: Chalk is found in various places all over the World, but strangely 99% of all chalk used as in manufacturing is from only 2 places, Northwest Europe and between the Rocky Mountains in the Mississippi River!

FACT: Chalk forms in marine environments with warm water and deep seas, but that is in the short-term, over millions of years it might form islands and can float off to other, colder parts of the World much like how the Isle of White (UK) was formed!

FACT: Chalk is a sedimentary rock which means it is deposited in layers, one on top of the other until they are pressed together, then over time they will cement into stone.

FACT: Chalk is composed mostly of the mineral calcite and it is made from the fossilised skeletons of microscopic marine plankton! That is kind of gross.

FACT: Chalk is a soft, white, fine-grained type of limestone but is pulled out the ground in a lumpy liquid form!
