10 – Modern Family
We will start the list with the American family sitcom created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd. Modern Family follows the story of three separate, but mutually connected families through eleven seasons. These are nuclear, same-sex, and blended families, each living in Los Angeles. The show won numerous awards, especially in the earliest stages. Each of the inaugural five seasons has thus won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
9 – The Nanny
Is there anyone who does not like to watch Fran Drescher in the “Nanny” role? The maiden season started showing back in 1993. The main story revolves around Fran Fine who is a Jewish fashion lady from Queens, New York. Funny things start to happen when she becomes a nanny of three children – Brighton, Grace, and Maggie. From then on, Fran is in charge of the kids, while the acerbic butler Daniel Davis takes care of the household and the home-related jobs. The show lasted for six seasons and it had its spin-off with Fran in the main role. Nevertheless, the spin-off did not last longer than two seasons.
8 – The Golden Girls
The Golden Girls provides 180 episodes full of love, laughter, empathy, and some serious questions that will make you wonder at times. The earliest days of the show date back to 1985 when the likes of Betty White, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Bea Arthur gathered to form a staggering crew of actresses. The story is located in Miami and revolves around four female pensioners who lived together and spent their days eating large amounts of cheesecakes, sarcastically provoking each other with some fantastic jokes, while at the same time dealing with serious life problems. Unfortunately, Beatrice Arthur had to leave after the seventh season. Since then, the show had three different spin-offs but none came anywhere near the Golden Girl success.
7 – The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Andy and Susan Borowitz created one of the most legendary American sitcoms that went on air from 1990 to 1996. The series launched Will Smith to the stars as he impersonated a fictional vision of himself. He was a teenager born in Philadelphia with all the street knowledge he needed. The show sends him to his wealthy uncle and aunt in Bel-Air where everything he had learned on the streets of Philadelphia collides with the upper-class life with his relatives in Bel-Air.
6 – 2 Broke Girls
Just as the title suggests, this American TV show describes everyday situations in the lives of Caroline Channing and Max Black. The two best friends collide with each other on so many levels, mainly in terms of wealth because Max was born and raised in poverty, while Caroline was a daughter of a billionaire. The two of them work together in a diner in an attempt to raise money for the new business.
5 – Two and a Half Men
Two and a Half Men is yet another classic American sitcom. It has gone live for as many as twelve years since 2003. In the earliest phases, Charlie Sheen had the main role together with Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones. In 2011, Sheen made some unhealthy comments about creator Chuck Lorre who was forced to part ways with the famous actor. Ashton Kutcher came in as a saviour in the shape of a billionaire who has bought Charlie’s house following his death. Nevertheless, Kucther’s appearance by no means reduced the quality of the show as this is one of the rare sitcoms that guarantees fun throughout the entire 12 seasons.
4 – Only Fools and Horses
This is the only non-American sitcom on this list. The legendary British series was created by John Sullivan and it aired on BBC One from 1981 to 1991. The plot happens in a small part of London, called Peckham. It tells the story of Derek “Del Boy” Trotter (David Jason) and his younger brother Rodney Trotter (Nicholas Lyndhurst). The whole series revolves around the hilarious ambitions of the two men to become rich. It shows numerous highs and lows in their lives through numerous circumstances that will make you laugh all the time.
3 – How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom that aired from 2005 to 2014. It told the story of the main character Ted Mosby and his hilarious group of friends in Manhattan. The whole series is about Ted telling his children the events that led to him meeting their mother, the events that eventually lasted for nine seasons. The series’ unique humour and dramatic elements incorporation made it so popular all over the globe.
2 – The Big Bang Theory
Leonard and Sheldon are outstanding physicians. They are geniuses in the lab and certainly among the smartest people on the planet. Nevertheless, as smart as they are in the lab, they lack common sense for numerous everyday happenings. This is where the young and attractive neighbour Penny comes in to teach them about ordinary life. The trio is joined by the likes of aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz, astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali, neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski, and an owner of a comic book store Stuart Bloom. You do not want to miss out on the events in 279 episodes televised over 12 seasons.
1– Friends
People will always argue about the top-spot choice, but the consensus among TV shows and sitcom admirers is that Friends is still the most legendary sitcom ever created. David Crane and Marta Kaufmann are well worth mentioning as the creators of a truly special sitcom that will conquer your heart regardless of your personal preferences. The show lasted for ten seasons with the last episode being shown in 2004. However, this sitcom is among the most popular TV shows even two decades later as people like to remember the good old days by re-watching it. We will end the article with the names of six extraordinary characters, each special in its own right. Jennifer Aniston starred as Rachel Green, Courtney Cox was a hilarious Monica Geller, and Lisa Kudrow lived in her own world as Phoebe Buffay. The trio’s male friends were equally interesting and hilarious, starting with Matt LeBlanc as a neighbouring actor. His roommate was charismatic Matthew Perry in the role of Chandler Bing who is the complete opposite of Monica’s brother Ross Geller, embodied by David Schwimmer.
