With some big cities and towns within its historic boundaries, it’s obvious that it has some pretty great hotels and places to stay the night. But which ones are the best of the best? While I will point out that I haven’t stayed in all the hotels in this area I have stayed in more than enough to justify making this list and they are all based on my own personal experience…
Radisson Blu Hotel, Durham, Frankland Lane, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
This laid-back hotel ticks all the right boxes especially for the price you pay. With an indoor pool, sauna, free Wi-Fi and a pretty good in-house restaurant it has all you need for a long stay, but cheap enough for a short stay as well. Sure, it’s a chain hotel, but for some reasons in Durham, the chain hotels are some of the best on offer!
La Spada Ristorante, Front Street, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
This might be a 250-year-old former coaching inn on the outside, but inside it has modern, comfortable rooms that make you feel at home. If you don’t mind the classic pub inn you will enjoy a stay here for sure and while it is a little pricy I do still think the price is justified.
Hotel Indigo Durham, Old Elvet, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
Once upon a time this building was university offices and was built in the 1800s. These days this chain hotel is a pretty swanky hotel with a grand restaurant, a bar & a gym. If you plan to visit Durham Cathedral this hotel is in a perfect location.
Ramside Hall Hotel, Carrville, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
If you like your hotels grand you can find solitude in this hotel. With large, plush bedrooms and even 2 championship golf courses to play around on. Golfing hotels are normally too far away from everything to make them family friendly, but this one still manages to be just that.

Durham Castle, Seaham, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
It’s not often you get to stay inside a real Norman castle, but that is exactly what this hotel is. With large, spacious bedrooms and just a short walk to Durham Cathedral, it is one of those hotels that are expensive, not because of what it offers, but because of what it is.
Beamish Hall Hotel, Beamish, Stanley – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
From the moment you step foot into this hotel, you feel like you’ve just stepped foot into a Jane Austen novel. With its high-beamed ceilings, stone walls and large chandelier this stunning hotel is as elegant as they come, but yet still keeps its prices low which is a pleasant surprise.
Lumley Castle, Ropery Lane, Chester le Street – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
Planning on watching the cricket at the Durham County Cricket Ground? This posh boutique hotel is the perfect location and features lavish period decor, elegant rooms and even fine dining. While the price you pay is not a lot, you really don’t get a lot of amenities that make that low price understandable.
South Causey Inn, Beamish Burn Road, Stanley – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
If you love horse riding this might be the best place in the UK to stay for the night. Thanks to its riding school/inn offers rustic rooms, free breakfast and Wi-Fi and very little else, but with this hotel, it really is all about its riding school for little ones who love horses this is like a dream location.

Beamish Park Hotel, Marley Hill, Newcastle upon Tyne – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
If you like your hotels to be a little more upscale and modern than usual this one offers just that and throws in a golf course & academy on top. Located just a few miles from Beamish Museum it has all you need for a stay while on business, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a family stay.
The Old Mill, Metal Bridge, Durham – Book Now: >> CLICK HERE <<
Once upon a time, this was a paper mill and corn mill and it was built in 1813. But these days it offers relaxing Country lodging in surprisingly modern rooms. With good pub style food and nice sized rooms, this is one of those hotels you will want to stay in forever (at first), but will soon get bored with the lack of things close to it.
