Ten of the Very Best Hotels in Cumbria, England

With the whole of the Lake District National Park within its borders, this is probably one of the most beautiful counties in the UK and of course, that means a lot of people visit here and they will all want a place to stay the night. So it is no wonder there are so many amazing hotels here that vary in both price and amenities. While I haven’t stayed in all the hotels in this area I have stayed in a lot of them due to being an avid walker, so that makes me more than qualified to pick ten of the best hotels in this area but do be aware that this list is only based on my own personal experience…

Queens Head Inn & Restaurant, Main St, Hawkshead, Ambleside

This hotel doesn’t offer a lot in the way of amenities, but it does have tonnes of personality. Overlooking the cobbled village square in central Hawkshead it is like something from a postcard only with some modern things like free wifi and a TV thrown in. A bed for the night doesn’t get much more traditional than this.

In fact, the family rooms are surprisingly spacious and the whole place feels laid back and relaxed. If you plan to unwind after a full days walking this place has you covered with its own spa and indoor heated pool.

If you plan on visiting Windermere this hotel located close to it is a great place to stay for the night. While it is an upscale hotel the prices are still pretty reasonable but this is a hotel aimed at couples rather than families, but even with kids you will find the staff friendly and helpful.

While some people find Appleby Manor dated I think it gives the place a certain charm and after all, it is a Victorian manor dating from 1871 that is now been turned hotel, so a little dating is to be expected. While not as posh as many other hotels in the same area I think the slightly lower price makes up for this. Based on my own experiences I have always enjoyed staying here and find little to fault with it.

OK, so this place is little more than a pub inn, but it is one of the best pub inns in the area and with a price that will surprise you (in a nice way). With its classic pub-style dining this is a great place for those planning a walking weekend in the area.

The Inn on the Lake, Glenridding, Penrith

Sometimes you just want to get away from it all and this is where this hotel comes into it. The setting is beautiful, the rooms are spectacular and all the staff are alert and attentive making you feel like the most important person in the hotel. OK, so the price is an issue, but I think you do get what you pay for here in terms of escapism and comfort.

This might be a high-end hotel but its prices are nowhere near what you might expect, especially given that the hotel was once a 16th-century castle! With fine dining and large venue halls, this is one of those hotels that are perfect for a wedding or a weekend stay as a couple thanks to its romantic setting mixed with most modern amenities.

It might sound like an inn at a local pub, but this is much more high-end without the high-end price tag attached. Set in a castle dating from the 1500s featuring its own landscaped gardens and fine-dining restaurant this is a little secret place to stay that is something so special (for the price) that you will want to keep it all to yourself.
