The Top 10 Most Popular Pets in the UK 2018

While some things seem to change almost every day there are other things like this pet list that barely changes year on year. This list of the UK’s most popular pets might be almost the same as other years in terms of who’s on it, but this year there are considerably fewer households that own one…

The Top 10 Most Popular Pets in the UK 2018

Reptiles

Reptiles

10 – Reptiles – Percentage of UK Households: 0.2

This is just about the only surprise on this list! This spot was previously filled with insects, but with more choice and cheaper prices lizards and snakes are now not just pets for the rich, but just about anyone who is willing to take the time to care for them.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs

9 – Guinea Pigs – Percentage of UK Households: 1.5

AKA: The Mini Rabbit! If you are not quite sure whether to get a rabbit or a hampster, go for a guinea pig because it’s the middle ground and the best of both animals.

Hampsters

Hampsters

8 – Hampsters – Percentage of UK Households: 2.3

While there are many other small rodents to choose from the Hampster will forever reign supreme. Maybes it’s those little cute cheeks or it’s fun personality that often wins people over at the pet shop.

Birds

Birds

7 – Birds (Other than Budgerigar) – Percentage of UK Households: 2.8

From parrots to something a little more exotic, birds are beautiful creatures, but when you compare the needs of a Parrot to those of a Budgie, you can see why people favour the budgie almost everytime.

Fish

Fish

6 – Fish (Other than Goldfish) – Percentage of UK Households: 2.9

From tropical to pong Karp, fish is the pet that requires little care, but even all the “other” fish sales combined won’t touch the numbers of Goldfish sold.

Budgerigars

Budgerigars

5 – Budgerigars – Percentage of UK Households: 4.2

The Budgie is still the king of UK pet birds. With their ability to learn lots of tricks and their friendly personality, budgies are so easy to take care of, even most Grandmas can do it.

Rabbits

Rabbits

4 – Rabbits – Percentage of UK Households: 4.5

Personally, I love rabbits. They are fun to watch, full of personality and don’t last long if your kids get bored of them, leaving you fewer years to care for them and clean them up every week.

Goldfish

Goldfish

3 – Goldfish – Percentage of UK Households: 9.1

Sadly goldfish numbers are going down faster than Donald Trump’s popularity rating! This is mostly down to changes in UK law that make it harder to buy a goldfish in the first place.

Cats

Cats

2 – Cats – Percentage of UK Households: 24.5

With the rise of popularity, thanks to “Caturday” cats are gaining ground on dogs year on year! They are easy to look after and of course perfect for a load of funny social media posts.

Dogs

Dogs

1 – Dogs – Percentage of UK Households: 26.9

Still the most popular pet here in the UK. With their loyalty, friendship and ability to protect both owner and property the dog is a hard pet to beat, esspecialy if you’re a burglar!
