Here in the UK, we might have the odd ‘cold blast’ but mostly we don’t get anything much before zero. But elsewhere in the world, a zero degrees temperature is little more than a wish that will never be answered. These are the coldest places on Earth and their lowest ever recorded temperatures…
The Top 10 Coldest Places on Earth and Their Lowest Temperatures
10 – Mohe County in China – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -52.3°F (-62.1°C)
This county is named after the Mohe, a Tungusic people of ancient Manchuria. and its so close to Russia that now and again it gets a nice little blast of coldness from it, but isn’t that warm even the summer!
9 – Malgovik in Sweden – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -53°F (-63.4°C)
The unofficial temperature of -53 °C was recorded on Dec 13, 1941, in Malgovik but sadly it was done with private equipment which means it might not have been quite as cold as it said, but still the record stands, I guess we will just have to take their word for it that it was calibrated properly.
8 – UST-Shchuger in Russia – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -58.1°F (-72.6°C)
Formerly known as Ust-Shchugor this small village is located at an elevation of 85 meters (279 ft)which might not sound very high, but it as more than enough to get it to this bone-chilling temperature.
7 – Prospect Creek in the United States – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -62°F (-80°C)
This small settlement was once home to various mining expeditions for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Today it is just a crazy cold place that is home to a pumping station and a very small amount of people.

6 – Snag in Canada – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -63°F (-81°C)
This small village located just off the Alaska Highway is a bowl-shaped valley of the White River meaning when cold pressure get trapped inside of the valley it makes the place extra cold, even for Canada!
5 – North Ice in Greenland – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -66.1°F (-87°C)
Recorded on the 9th of January 1954, this small research station of the British North Greenland Expedition was a temperature so cold it is said to kill any human exposed to it for anything more than a few brief moments.
4 – Verkhoyansk in Russia – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -68°F (-90°C)
This small town in the Verkhoyansky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the Yana River near the Arctic Circle is home to the greatest temperature range on Earth: 105 °C (189 °F) which means you just never know what to wear from one moment to the next!
3 – Dome A in Antarctica – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -82.5°F (-116.5°C)
Said to be the loftiest ice dome on the Antarctic Plateau, it is also thought to be the coldest naturally occurring place on Earth, but still, it is not the place with the lowest ever recorded temperature.

2 – Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in the South Pole – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -82.8°F (-117°C)
This US scientific research station located at the South Pole is at the southernmost place on the Earth. This place is so cold that it wasn’t until 1956 that the first known human structure was made!
1 – Vostok Station in Antarctica – Lowest Recorded Temperature: -89.2°F (-128.6°C)
And for our number one, we go all the way back to Antarctica for what is the lowest reliably measured natural temperature on Earth. While some will claim lower the equipment used was often uncalibrated and therefore little more than guesswork.
