Rainbows are nature’s very own colourful work of art, so it is no wonder so many different artists use it as their inspiration. So that brings us nicely to today’s post, featuring some of the best rainbow coloured art installations I have ever seen…
10 – Motor Colours – www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/06/hung-out-to-dry
Seen at the international arts festival in Germany is the art installation called “Flurstücke 011” and it was made by Generik Vapeur and while it was taken a few years ago now it is still one of my favourite images.
9 – Wear The Rainbow – www.odditycentral.com/pics/the-recycled-art-of-guerra-de-la-paz.html
Artistic duo Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz from Cuba make some of the most amazing art installations from recycled clothing you will ever see and this rainbow is one of them and one of their best in my opinion.
8 – Drive Over The Rainbow – www.thisiscolossal.com/2011/12/rainbow-toy-car-installation-made-from-2500-cars
This circular rainbow is made from over 2,500 old toy cars and is made by UK artist David T. Waller. I think I might have a go at making this myself!
7 – Colourful Columbidae – www.patrickmurphystudio.co.uk/index.php?/works/belonging
Only on the roof of the Liverpool Biennial could you expect to see these rainbow spectra coloured pigeons made by urban artist Patrick Murphy.

6 – Rubbish Rainbow – greentravelife.com/alejandro-duran-the-washed-up-project
Alejandro Durán is one of those people who really do care about the planet and the rubbish that gets dumped into the oceans. So they made various art sculptures in the Biosphere Reserve called “Washed Up.” good for him and it is certainly a beautiful way of getting the message across.
5 – Rainbow Tunnel – inhabitat.com/lightrails-illuminates-a-disused-alabama-underpass-with-rainbow-led-lights/bill-fitzgibbons-lightchannels2
Made by Bill FitzGibbons this rainbow tunnel of a light installation called ‘LightRails’ makes an otherwise boring road tunnel something to smile about. Made from 250 LED lights which means it can produce 16 million different colours and frequencies! Every tunnel should have this installed.
4 – Rainbow Books – inhabitat.com/aspen-mays-rainbow-spectrum-book-sculpture-is-inspired-by-einsteins-theories
Created by Aspen Mays this colourful book rainbow sculpture called ‘Every Book’ (as in under the rainbow) is her way of paying homage to Albert Einstein‘s theories by incorporating each of Einstein’s books.
3 – Rainbow Bridge – www.feeldesain.com/banpo-bridge-rainbow-fountain.html
Not only is this the world’s longest bridge fountain, but it is also got 200 lights that illuminate the fountain sending rainbow-coloured jets of water in the air in synchronisation with music! Not so much a bridge, more a show in its own right!

2 – Smear Campaign – www.thisiscolossal.com/2010/09/rainbow/
Best not done one anyone else’s car other than your own is this way to create a full arch rainbow. This one made by Rotterdam artist Helmut Smits is one of the most viral art images you will ever see and is featured on thousands of websites, often with the motivational message of “smile.”
1 – Pulled Tight – uk.pinterest.com/theworldstop10
It might look like it is made from a prism of some sort, but in truth, it is made from thousands of strands of strained coloured threads! When made tight and coloured to look like a rainbow the effect is truly amazing.
