While I would like to have done this post based on the number of bricks used bricks do of course come in all shapes and sizes much like the buildings they are made of. So we are going on the ground area they cover and some of them are very impressive indeed…
The Top 10 Largest Brick Buildings in the World (Based on Ground Size)
10 – St. Mary’s Church, Gdańsk, Poland – Ground Size: 4,851 Sq/m
When they first started construction of this church in 1379 it was going to be the largest brick building in the world and even today it is still the largest brick church in the world which is pretty impressive given its age, but its far from being one of the tallest churches in the world that is for sure.
9 – State Historical Museum, Russia – Ground Size: 6,266 Sq/m
Located between the Red Square and the Manege Square it features a massive range of exhibits including some rather impressive relics of prehistoric tribes that once lived in the territory that is now Russia.
8 – Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Malaysia – Ground Size: 7,191 Sq/m
Named after the Sultan Abdul Samad who was reigning sultan of Selangor at the time its construction began in 1894!
7 – Jetavanaramaya, Sri Lanka. – Ground Size: 7,523 Sq/m
This is officially the worlds tallest stupa and it is located in the sacred world heritage city of Anuradhapura. This building has been significant in the history of the world and is also said to be the tallest structure in the known ancient world.

6 – Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, Spain – Ground Size: 18,423 Sq/m
This is, of course, the world famous bullring and it has a seating capacity of 25,000 and it still in use for bullfighting today. While you might not agree with its use, the building is nonetheless impressive.
5 – Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse, UK – Ground Size: 21,583 Sq/m
This grade II listed building (that is now 476 luxury apartments) was once part of a much larger development, but the main warehouse is still intact.
4 – Battersea Power Station, UK – Ground Size: 24,570 Sq/m
This Decommissioned coal-fire burning power station is located right on the south bank of the river Thames in south-west London. In reality, it is two individual power stations that were built separately but in the form of a single building.

Also known as London St Pancras it changed its name in 2007 to St Pancras International. After escaping a planned demolition in the 1960’s the whole complex was renovated and expanded in 2007 at a total cost of £800 million!

This was a fully functioning hospital until 2009 and it is even now undergoing restoration for use as a museum and cultural arts centre.
