While we are all still in lockdown you might be wondering what ways you can get fit using nothing more than the objects around your own home. This list features ten great ideas that use things almost everyone should have and just about anyone can start to get fit with. So why not put on your tracksuit bottoms and let’s go around the home looking for things that will help us achieve those new year fitness resolutions…
The Stairs
Unless you live in a bungalow you should have at least a few steps to do some fitness on. From simple walking up and down them as much as you can to doing lunges you can do loads of great little exercises on stairs, but do be careful as to not overdo it, especially if you have a lot of them. If you are worried you might fall down them why not just stick to the first 2 or 3 steps only.
Lager Water or Milk jugs
Did you know a large bottle of milk can hold as much as 10 pounds in weight? Why not use one or even two of them to give your arms a good workout. By simply going a few bicep reps you can turn those “bingo wings” into stones in just a few short weeks.
Chairs
Be it the sofa or just a dining room chair, you can do loads of great little workouts using them and end up with toned arms and triceps a gym buddy would be proud of. Just make sure the chair can support your weight, even when all of it is on the front legs only and make sure the chair itself can’t move anywhere (up against a wall is best).
Ladder
Do you have a small set of steps at home or maybe even a tall ladder? If you do you can always use them in a number of ways like doing steps up and down the rungs and even giving the arms a workout by curing it. A ladder is not just handy for painting, its a workout machine!

Tins of Food
Do you have tins of soup or something else just sitting in the cupboard? You can easily turn them into small dumbbells and work you way up to using something a little heavier like bottles of laundry detergent. As with any exercise it is best to start small and work your way up. That tin of peaches might be the start of something amazing!
Pets
It doesn’t have to be a dog who will get you fit, you can start exercising by following the cat as it walks around the garden or maybe even a rabbit as it hops around. Heck, even a tortoise can give you a good workout if you let it roam free, it will soon knock up those miles and you as well if you take the time to follow it. Besides, paying about with pets is also great for your mental health.
Books & Magazines
It’s not just the act of living those said books to give yourself a workout, you can also use them to tilt your pushups or even trying to balance them on your head as you walkabout. Some books can be surprisingly heavy and the more books you have, the more exercises you can do with them. Why not try doing a pushup using books in each hand! It’s not as easy as you might think.
Broom or Mop Handle
You might be thinking you can’t do a lot with a broom handle other than brush the floor, but you can also use it to do leg-hinges to help your posterior and even lunges in the form of owner drops in which you hold the pole upright and squat next to it, using the handle for support. While the strong wooden handles are best, most mop handles are steel these days and should be OK as well.

Backpack
Do you have an old backpack or camping bag just laying around in the cupboard? Why not do some walking lunges with it or maybe some squats. The more weight is inside of it the better it will be for your workout. That could be as simple a chore as filling some bottles of water and placing them inside (provided the lids are on properly).
The Garden
A small back garden is overlooked as too small to exercise in, but a few laps of the smallest of gardens can transform your cardio workout. Just pop in some headphones and go for it. This is especially good if you have a tall fence as you can exercise without feeling like anyone is judging you.
