Breakups are never clean nor easy – that goes for both sides. However, life goes on, and you need to find ways to be fair to yourself. You cannot let breakups drag you down and ruin your mental or physical wellbeing. Here are just a few simple ways in which you can get over a breakup more easily.
Put your Ex Out of Your Mind
The first and arguably the most important thing you should do is distance yourself from your ex. Try and put away your photos, memorabilia, and any clothes or accessories you may have from them. These will only hurt you more and you need to give yourself a fresh start. Put away anything that reminds you of them if possible.
Hit the Gym
Physical exercise is a great way for you to get a fresh start after a difficult breakup. You can start going to the gym, start jogging or pick up yoga, or even meditation. This will help you get into a routine and gain better control over your body again.
Pick Up a New Hobby
There are hundreds of hobbies out there that can make getting over a breakup easier. Gaming, books, TV shows, painting, hand-crafting, and freelancing are only some of the things you can try out. Try your hand at different hobbies and think about what you’ve always felt like doing but never had the time to – do that now.
Try Online Dating for a Bit
While you may not be fully ready for a new relationship yet, there’s no harm in testing the proverbial waters. Online dating is a good way to do that. You can visit Taimi if you’re looking for someone from the LGBTQ+ community to data or just talk to. Take it a step at a time – online dating may just prove to be the remedy you were looking for.
Travel Abroad
Visiting an entirely new place can give you the clarity you need to get over a hard breakup. If you’ve ever wanted to go to Paris, Athens, or London – do it now. Look at cheap flights and start packing your suitcase for a weekend abroad.
Treat Yourself
We often don’t want to admit this to ourselves, but being in a relationship is financially taxing. You should find small silver linings in what happened to you and treat yourself to something nice. Buy yourself a new Kindle, some clothes, or a new accessory you’ve wanted for a while.
Talk to a Close Friend
Having a shoulder to support you through the breakup is always helpful. This is especially helpful if your friend is familiar with your previous relationship and can offer some guidance and/or advice. Talk to a friend over some wine and get your thoughts out of your system in a safe environment.
Think About Volunteering
Volunteering with a cause you believe in is sometimes just what you need to get over a breakup. Look for local NGOs or organizations with programs abroad. Set aside a few weeks of your life and devote them to a worthy cause. You’ll come out of the experience rejuvenated and with something valuable to add to your resume.
Go Out with your Friends
Going out for drinks or social events is very important during the post-breakup phase of your life. Surround yourself with people and friends who know what you’re going through. Even if you go out for an hour or two and talk to people, you’ll still gain a lot from those social experiences.
Give Yourself Time to Heal
There’s no formula to how long you’ll need to get over your ex. Some people are lucky and only need a few weeks to get back to themselves. Others aren’t so lucky and need more time to heal and become who they were before the relationship. Don’t force or push the healing process forward – take it slow and give it the time it needs.
While these methods will help you move on more easily, the most important thing you need to do is to give it some time. You won’t get over your ex in a day or two. It will be some time before you’re fully healed and ready to give yourself to someone in the same way you did up until recently. Everything is temporary, however, and so is heartache – be good to yourself and take life one small step at a time.
