Top 10 Strange and Unusual Dumbbells

If I am honest with myself I am a bit overweight, but very physically fit and active, I do walk my dog several miles each and every day (rain, wind or shine) and I have a small selection of at home exercising equipment that I do use for 30 mins each day without fail. But it is hard to stay motivated while doing a workout at home so I have decided to get myself some new exercise equipment, something fun, something amazing, something that is a little…different. So without further ado here is what I would consider to be…

When it comes to upcycling I love it and a while ago I showed you this rather amazing CD dumbbell that we could all make at home and it is still a really good idea and a lot cheaper than buying new ones!

These amazing concepts designed dumbbells by designers Emron Jackson Henry and Professor Bryan Howell offers the idea of a built-in recoil system. Called the “ReCoil” it is a workout system where the dumbbells act with resistant bands. Sure it is a slightly weird idea, but they do look amazing none the less.

8 – CD Workout

This is basically the same idea as number (10) but taken to a whole new level! You see the idea is that one or two CD/DVDS/BLU-RAY disks don’t weight a lot, but lots of them really do! (imagine the weight of 2 cd spindles!) so this takes that idea and makes it modern in both idea and looks.

7 – The best of best!

These Bodymax dumbbells do the job of replacing 15 sets of weights! You just turn the dial and it will automatically change your resistance from 2 kg (5 lbs) all the way up to 24 kg (52.5 lbs) of weight! This is most probably the future of dumbbells, but sadly a little expensive for my needs.

6 – Magnetic Attraction

These Magnetic dumbbells come via a pair, (North Pole {NP} charged) comes with a cradle and South Pole (SP) pointer magnets. The idea is that when you need to add weight you just increasing the magnetic power of attraction between the SP pointers and the NP Dumbbells! Sounds simple but I suspect they are rather complicated to make.

5 – The Pasta Strainer

With amazing function and utilitarian design, these are what happens when a designer makes a set of dumbbells, but I think it ends with rather amazing results! Designed by Henriette Melchiorsen they have an almost beautiful modern sculpture look about them, too expensive for my tastes, but simply amazing to look at none the less.

4 – Crystal Workout

The problem with the basic design of dumbbells is that they have to be heavy and that is the reason most of them are made of metals! But what about other heavy materials like crystal! That is where designer Alex Undall comes into it because he comes up with a concept that uses a dense crystal instead of metals with rather amazing results!

3 – The Poaa Effect

It seems that once again a designer (Philippe Starck) has tried to re-design the dumbbell and yet again we are left with something that does indeed look amazing. But I have to ask myself if they really exercise equipment or just art! Maybe it is a touch of both!

Why am I a little overweight! News flash for you:”food tastes great!” so why should I give up doing the one thing I love in life (other than blogging) so why not combine the both and get these cutlery set dumbbells! Not only do these look cool, but they are a great idea and for me the perfect solution.

  3. I am a little slow posting ended up on the ER over the weekend in a few large kidney stone on to top of recovering from surgery. but I am on the mend and doing great. I actually have two blogs linked together. befor marriage and after marriage. everything I write is true cuz some of the stuff that happens here sounds like a somether out of a movie lol. be sure to read the other one Single Moms Worlds it is my time being a single mom to a spit fire little grirl kinda like me. so if you are easily offended this might not be your page. but fun raunchy is what I write. have fun and I will give you a shout out on my new blog

  4. I am afraid of the water – no doubt from being swept under by a wave at the beach when I was 5. However, I found someone who used to teach the Eskimos how to swim, asked her to teach me to swim. I now do a dignified dog paddle that gets me from one end of the pool to the other. Esther Williams has no competition from me.

  5. So far the only exercise I enjoy is swimming – it doesn’t feel like exercise. I did use weights when I was in rehab with my broken hip – even buhgt a set to use at home. One day I will actually use them. Even so, seeing different designs and materials are always interesting.

  6. Loved the crystal ones, and jotted down a reminded to make c.d. weights with all of the disks laying around the house. I thought the Gothic ones were outstanding… Which if you knew me you’d never guess that about me… LOL.. I see them as Art disguised as weights…Love the post as usual and await the next from you .. Always gives a smile to my day.. Take care and stay happy/smiling…

  7. By the way, Russell, for some reason your site takes forever and a day to load. It might be because of the number of graphics, I suppose, but it might be the site theme. There’s another teme, High winds, a couple of blogs I follow use, and I need another shave by the time they load.

  8. I nearly lost the will to live here. Is is just me who finds the idea of Philip Stark making ludicrous amounts of money unsettling? I mean, his famous lemon squeezer looked the mutt’s nuts, but it won’t squeeze a lemon without chucking juice all over the worktops

  9. I am a first time visitor to this blog and I am intrigued. I am not of the skinny crowd, I am of the real woman crowd and love my food. Maybe what I was lacking was the utensil weights. I am a busy mother and I could knock out two birds with one stone lol. I cant wait to read more. If you get a chance to stop by new blog and if you are looking for something to read I linked my old blog it, Single Mom Wold. I will be back frequently.

  10. Thank you so much! I just post things that make me smile each day and hope other people find some amusement with it as well. If I can make one person smile it has been well worth it.

Which one did you like?
