Drinking straws are one of those things that I always feel nostalgic over. The moment the liquid touches my lips after passing through the plastic is the moment my mind takes me back to lazy summers having picnics with ex-girlfriends, party’s and memories of my mum offering my friends and me a glass of juice after playing football. But I have been wondering if people do anything else with plastic straws other than drink with them, and it seems people use them for all sort of things…
Top 10 Creative Things to do With Drinking Straws
10 – Paper is so old fashioned!
I have no idea how well it works, but kids all over the World have been turning little plastic straws into modern paper planes! With a great making guide in the link, I just might have to see if they are any good or not.
9 – The Deep Blue Straw
When we all see a drinking straw we think about tasting a nice cold drink of coke through it. But when artist Annie Boyden Varnot sees them she thinks about all the breathtaking sculptures she could make! While us mere mortals could only dream of doing anything like these, it is still one of the most amazing things made with straws I have ever seen.
8 – Budget Fiber Optics Lamp
It has to be said that this is quite beautiful! Made from over 1500 drinking straws this lap is one very creative idea and provided you have the motivation you can use the step by step guide to making your very own straw lamp in the link.
7 – Bending over backwards to help you.
While this might not be a business card in the same vein as my post “Top 10 Business Cards” it is still a get use of the bending section of the drinking straw to showcase a local yoga class. But unless you offer yoga lessons this might not really work for you.
6 – He went that way, officer!
Are you on the run from a 60’s comedy film style police officer? Well, worry no more because these amazing striped paper straws have a handy Moustache attached to avoid detection! Well, it might fool then if they are short sighted anyway.
5 – Easier than getting the leaves off!
Why fiddle around with knives when all you have to do it Insert a straw into the end of the strawberry and push through to the stem! No hassle, mess or horrible steam in the mouth!
4 – Express yourself.
Bangkok design studio FarmGroup created this hanging art installation made by used drinking straws to emphasise the idea that nearly anything has a second life and can be reused. Well, it worked because this massive word “YEAH!” (See link for more details) provided a second life for well over 10,000 drinking straws!
3 – Jules Verne would be proud.
Well, this one is a right slap in the face for poor number (10) in this list because it is a real flying model plane made with nothing more than and a little bit of tape, some thread, drinking straws and sandwich wrap! Now this is what I call amazing and nothing short of it.
2 – The perfect chair if you have been swimming
If you have just got out of one of the “Top 10 Most Amazing Swimming Pools” or for that fact any swimming pool, you would be dripping wet. Sure you could use a towel to dry yourself down afterwards but why do that when you could just sit in the chair made from drinking straws by Scott Jarvie and let it drip right through!

What better thing to do with simple plastic drinking straws than to turn then into a jelly worm making factory! Well, these just make me smile and with a great step by step guide to making them in the link it had to be my number 1 because it is sheer genius.
