This post is about a growing band of people who have told me that once a year they bath their cats! Not only do cats need this from time to time, but some even enjoy it! But some, on the other hand, hate it, so with that in mind I bring you…

10 – “Do I look like a bar of soap to you, get me out of here!”

TIP: Why not think about bathing the cat with yourself! Why you will have to use cat shampoo in the bath it still smells just as nice and doesn’t harm humans. Best of all the cat might well be a lot calmer in your loving arms.

9 – “A shower is OK I guess, just like raining indoors! But I would rather be outside.”

TIP: If your cat really hates bath time try calmly talking to it, but always make sure you have a good grip on the neck or shoulders.

8 – “The only duck I want to play with is the one where your ducking to avoid my claws!!!”

TIP: If you are worried about scratches and claw marks why not lightly trim your cat’s nails before even attempting to bathe it. Done slowly and this will not cause you cat too much stress.

7 – “Smile on, because when I get out of here you will pay with blood.”

TIP: To make it easier on yourself and better for the cat, try combing the cat’s fur thoroughly before putting the cat in the water. This helps remove knots and tangles before wetting the fur.

6 – “WHAT THE?!? You need to learn to knock the door before you enter dad! Sheesh!”

TIP: A cat that is covered in something greasy will be very difficult to clean using just shampoo, so try rubbing some vegetable oil into first as this really will break it up and make it easy to clean, it might sound like a strange tip, but it apparently works a treat.

5 – “Can you pass my bathrobe please mum, I wanted to keep my hair dry.”

Tip: When it comes to using shampoo on your cat make sure you only use a shampoo that states on the bottle that it’s for cats! This is important to remember because many other shampoos can, in fact, be highly toxic to them!

4 – “………I hate you.”

Tip: Try and have some buckets or watering cans beside the bath to allow the flow of water while rinsing the cat. This is so you don’t to run the water during the bath time which might frighten it.

3 – “Is it true that if I keep playing with the plug I will be sucked down with the bath water?”

Tip: Never fill the bath too high. Just 4-5 inches of warm water is enough and always remember to fill it before bringing your cat into the bathroom since some cats can be scared of running water.

2 – “For I am your king! Bow before me puny human!”

Tip: Go for teamwork! By getting two people involved in washing your cat (even the smallest of cat can have a strong kick and wriggle) One person should hold its legs and hold the jaw shut so it can’t bite you. It sounds nasty but it better than your cat getting flies!

  2. One thing we all know, you never know what a cat will do at any given time. Some seem quite comfortable in the bath, others are ready to kick and scratch their way out of the water. Nothing is ever predictable with them. I found the photos so much fun. Gave me a real smile today.

  3. Both of mine get baths about once a month or so. They don’t love it, but they handle it pretty well. We just have to make sure there is no standing water, which is hard with the Maine Coon, since he has long hair that clogs the hair trap so quickly. The funniest thing is that when he is tired of getting washed he starts this yowl that sounds like he is saying “Raul”, over and over. It’s almost like those dogs that sound like they’re saying “I love you”. If you want to bathe your cats, make sure to start exposing them to water as kittens. It makes it a LOT easier. 🙂

  4. hehe cute cute (*^ワ^*)
when my cat take a bath it is a fighting game when i had to take a bath as well (=`〜´=).

  5. I had a cottage on the edge of an inlet in the harbour. The tides were gentle there and when they were out he would go down the wee hill and chase the seagulls and egrets that were paddling there – they just laughed at him. I think he thought he was a dog. He would come back smelling of salt, it was lovely. A couple of years ago I moved him into town. He doesn’t like it. I look forward to seeing the 10 hedgehogs list.

  6. I just don’t have the nerve to bathe any of my cats even though I really want to. I may just have to break down and face up to a “few” scratches! It’s just that those nails can be like little razors and I’m such a coward when it comes to pain! :O

  7. When my cat was a kitten he bounced into the shower with me. He didn’t much like it, but has ever after gotten into the shower as soon as the water is turned off. He just sits there and pats at any water that remains. He also paddles in the sea. But he has never had a full bath and I sincerely hope that he never has to as I don’t have a shower cap to protect his ears and that appears to be pretty much mandatory………. lol

Russell, have you considered a top 10 of hedgehogs? I’ve noticed pinterest is awash with cute hedgie pictures and the facts would be really interesting ….. Just a thought 🙂

  9. HAHA ! I am not a terrible cat lady like my friends said when my sister and I out of the blue decided to put my cat in a basin of water. He didn’t thrash. But my god what a rat he looked like afterwards (‘:

  11. Love t he cats’ ears all protectected–too funny. You might get a kick out of this kitten–one that loves baths.

  12. #2 looks like he’s wearing one of those Russian hats, but made out of soap bubbles.

I wonder — do people use warm water while washing their cats or cold water? Maybe it’s the temperature of the water that many cats and dogs don’t like?

  13. I don’t think that our cat would allow it . But , many years ago we had another cat who liked to go under the tap & take a small shower.
